Session:
All day
Level:
All
Description:

Where do you begin when you are facing the blank page? How do you cleverly convey a message through our calligraphic arts? In the morning session, I will help you stimulate ideas and define the elements to include as you begin to create a unique lettering art design. Get ready to “think outside the box!” Test your choices and share/glean ideas from others in the class as you sketch out a “uniquely yours” design. You will discover different ways to approach the same words. In the afternoon we will build on the foundation laid in the morning and I will pose as your client, asking you to create 3 simple rough designs from the same quote, each with a different emphasis on the words or design elements. You will be guided with ideas to help you think through the design process, and I will share my Contract and other thoughts on how I creatively complete designs for clients.

Supplies:

Pencil, Mars Staetler eraser, Water pot (to rinse brushes), Bond, tracing paper, D’Arches HP or Lanaquarelle... what ever you like to sketch with, Ruler, Your favorite calligraphy pens, ruling pens, colored pencils or markers (for roughing out designs), Winsor Newton watercolor, gouache (whatever you like to carry to workshops for color), A travel kit of colors or at least 3 colors and gold, A few small brushes to apply some general color - WN Series 7 or other, (to roughly place color into your work). A favorite quote, verse or poem. Imagery in the words will help in this class. Keep it to 2-3 sentences.
