In this calligraphic design class, we embrace the beauty of the Lombardic capital. By embellishing it with a traditional acanthus leaf as a focal point and using simple design elements, we add interest, movement, and individuality. Completing the letter with gouache and metallic gold paint, students will be pleased with their uniquely adorned initial.


One or two pieces of 6”x6” smooth watercolor or mixed media paper at least 90 lb, pencil and eraser, micron pen 01 or 02, or other extra fine point permanent marker, ruler or straight edge, pointed pen with straight holder for outlining. Gouache: titanium white, winsor blue or other dark blue, permanent green deep or other dark green, permanent red or other cool red, Finetek gold or other metallic gold. brushes: 20/0 Princeton Monogram or other brush for detailing, Sceptre gold II, size 0 or other pointed round brush. Tracing paper 6”x6” or larger, if you have it, for transferring image, 6-well (or more) painting palette, two water containers – one for clean, one for dirty water, paper towels.
