The Walker Grant 2022

Please note this is a grant opportunity. Applicants should have exceptional penmanship skills and should desire to develop those skills to above that of the average person.

Brian Walker, IAMPETH Master Penmen, artist, and a founding Fellow of the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society (CLAS), passed away in July 2018.  Brian resided in South Yorkshire, England, and was the founder of the Spencerian Study Group.  He was considered to be one of the world’s finest Spencerian penmen.  IAMPETH offers this grant in Brian’s memory.

IAMPETH is an international, non-profit association dedicated to practicing and preserving the beautiful arts of calligraphy, engrossing and fine penmanship. We are excited to have the opportunity to offer this grant to fund the purchase of good-quality tools and equipment necessary to improve skills or to attend the yearly week-long Spencerian Saga or IAMPETH’s annual conference.

NOTE:  Members cannot apply for the IAMPETH Scholarship, the Tate Grant, the Walker Grant, and the Muffler Grant in the same calendar year.  There will be no exceptions made to the full list of requirements.

Requirements for applicants are as follows:

  • Applicants should have some calligraphic knowledge and/or experience
  • Have completed high school (or the equivalent)
  • Be an IAMPETH member in good standing. This means your dues for the 2021-2022 year must be paid as of June 30, 2021 in order to be eligible for the 2022 conference scholarships
  • And be at least 18 years of age at the time of the conference.
  • Applications must be submitted no later than November 30, 2021.  The grant applicants will be notified of the committee decision by February 1, 2022.

The grant funds of $500.00 may be used to purchase supplies and tools necessary to enhance the recipient’s calligraphic skills with a gift certificate to either John Neal Books or Paper and Ink Arts (or a combination of the two), or to offset expenses for attending the 2022 Fall session of the Spencerian Saga, or the annual IAMPETH Conference in Atlanta, Georgia, July 11-16, 2022.  The Grant will run for a period of ten (10) years beginning in 2020 and ending in 2030.  The grant proceeds will be awarded to a different recipient in each of the ten years.

The Walker grant is non-transferable. If the recipient is unable to attend or to select and purchase supplies, tools, and books, the grant is forfeited and any funds received must immediately be returned to IAMPETH.

The recipient is required within the year’s span from conference to conference to give back in some way to IAMPETH. For example – writing a newsletter article, hosting a table at the Round Robin, donating an item to the silent auction, or volunteering and assisting at the conference.
