Yumie Tanaka: ORNAMENTAL PENMANSHIP 101
Teacher's Note: Knowing some Spencerian or Business Writing in advance is a plus.
In this session, participants will learn traditional Ornamental Penmanship (“OP”) script style from the old masters from the Golden Age (19th and early 20th century). We will refer to sample OP script from the IAMPETH archive room, such as Louis Madarasz, E.A. Lupfer, C.P. Zaner, as well as other past masters, and learn secrets that make their OP beautiful and pleasing to our eyes. We will analyze each OP lower case and capital letters and learn how to make our own writings resemble the old masters style. Time permitted, students will apply the findings to their own OP and the instructor will give feedback in class.
Practice grid sheets (e.g. Rhodia, Clairefontaine, Mnemosyne), your favorite ink (e.g. Old World Ink), flexible nib (e.g. EF Principal, Titanium G), oblique holder, multi-color ball point pen & several highlight pens for taking notes, ruler with centimetres, protractor & set squares.
