IAMPETH Scholarship Program


Mission Statement

IAMPETH is an international, non-profit association dedicated to practicing and preserving the beautiful arts of calligraphy, engrossing and fine penmanship. We are excited to have the opportunity to offer financial assistance to this end.


Candidate Qualification

This is a scholarship opportunity, not a juried competition. Applicants of all skill levels will receive equal consideration.

  • Applicants should have some calligraphic knowledge and/or experience
  • Have completed high school or the equivalent
  • Be an IAMPETH member in good standing, for at least one year
  • Be at least 18 years of age at the time of the annual conference
  • Not have been awarded any scholarship/grant within the previous 5 years

Program Timeline

The scholarship applications are accepted from September 15 through November 30 of each year. Only one Scholarship or Grant application may be submitted within the same application period.

General Scholarship

The General Scholarship is for $1000 intended to assist in expenses associated with attending the annual conference. Once the conference fees are deducted, the remainder of the $1000 will be awarded to the recipient at the annual conference by check to a recipient with a United States banking account or in cash to recipients from outside of the United States who do not have a U.S. banking account.


International Scholarship

The International Scholarship is intended to assist in expenses associated with attending the annual conference by an IAMPETH member who resides outside the United States. The scholarship money, up to $3000, will be awarded to the recipient for the purpose of assisting in expenses associated with attending the annual conference fees, standard airfare and hotel room from the day before registration through the day after the closing banquet. Airfare & hotel will be paid through the IAMPETH travel associate. Recipient will be responsible for shuttle fees, meals and supplies during the conference.


Penman’s Legacy Grant (starting 2024)

The Penman’s Legacy Grant will be awarded each year in memory of a notable penman. The Penman’s Legacy Grant is a $500.00 award which may be used as a gift certificate to either John Neal Bookseller or Paper and Ink Arts or to offset expenses to attend the IAMPETH Annual Conference


Tate Grant

The Tate Grant is offered for a period of ten (10) years beginning in 2016 and ending in 2025.
The Tate Grant is a $500.00 award which may be used as a gift certificate to either John Neal Bookseller or Paper and Ink Arts or to offset expenses to attend the IAMPETH Annual Conference.


Walker Grant (ended 2023)

Brian Walker, IAMPETH Master Penmen, artist, and a founding Fellow of the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society (CLAS), passed away in July 2018. Brian resided in South Yorkshire, England, and was the founder of the Spencerian Study Group. He was considered to be one of the world’s finest Spencerian penmen. IAMPETH offers this grant in Brian’s memory.
The Walker Grant is a $500.00 award which may be used as a gift certificate to either John Neal Bookseller or Paper and Ink Arts or to offset expenses to attend the IAMPETH Annual Conference.


Muffler Grant (ended 2023)

Rick Muffler, IAMPETH Master Penman and former President, artist, and retired White House Calligrapher passed away in February 2020. Rick always had an interest in helping young penmen improve their skills, and frequently paid for them to attend the IAMPETH Annual Conference. IAMPETH offers this grant in Rick’s memory.
The grant funds will include the amount of the Registration Fee for the recipient to attend the IAMPETH Annual Conference and an additional $100 gift certificate for calligraphy supplies to either Paper & Ink Arts or John Neal Bookseller.


Local Scholarship (ended 2023)

The Local Scholarship is intended to serve a person local to the annual conference who does not need to bear travel or housing expenses. The scholarship includes the conference fees only. The recipient must still pay their IAMPETH membership dues.


Recipient Obligation

The recipient is required within the year’s span to give back in some way to IAMPETH. Examples include: writing a newsletter article, hosting a table at the Round Robin, teaching a session at the following year’s conference, donating an item to the silent auction, or assisting at the conference.


Limitations

All scholarships are non-transferable. If the recipient is unable to attend, the award is forfeited and any funds received must immediately be returned to the IAMPETH Scholarship Chair.
